Trees, wild flowers and Other Plants

Trees, flowers and other plants have many characters that can be used to identify them, some are obvious and some less so. Note when and where it is growing also the leaf shape, flower shape and fruits and bark in trees. Remember that most plants are variable and features can differ in size and shape, even on the same plant.
Trees and Shrubs
Trees and Shrubs are long-lived woody plants with a main trunk or several stems arising from the ground. There are 60 species of tree that are native to Britain, tho many trees have been introduced from other parts of the world which are now common and familiar trees or shrubs.
Grasses, Sedges and Rushes
Grasses, Sedges and Rushes are long, blade-like leaved plants which can be thin, wiry and have tube-like stems.
Flowerless & Seedless Plants
Seedless and flowerless plants reproduce by spores. They require moist environments to flourish. These include Ferns, Mosses & Liverworts, Fungi & Lichen, Horsetails and Quillworts.
Climbers and Scrambles
Climbers and Scrambles are woody and non-woody vines with stems that climb or scramble up trees. Most common in woods and hedges where they merely use their host plant for support.
Wild Flowers
Wild Flowers can come in many shapes and sizes. Here you can ID them from leaf shape before it has come into flower as well as the flower itself.
