In the woods flowers start early in the year as they have to beat the shade of the leaves from deciduous trees which closes over to create deep shadow usually by mid-May. So for flowers that like the sun the race begins in Spring, carpets the woodland floor.

Once the leaf canopy has closed the range of wild flowers is reduced but the same wildflowers appear. A range of shade tolerant plants now emerges but even these plants seek out the light.
